Obsessed with Outlander

Have you ever heard of the term “fictional boyfriend”? They’re the guys that you swoon over because they’re absolutely perfect – handsome, mysterious, courageous, chivalrous, and just the whole package. The kicker? They’re not real. Not even celebrity status real. No, they only exist in fiction in the form of books and movies.

In my life, I’ve only dreamed of a few fictional boyfriends: Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice, Stephen Salvatore for a brief moment when I had my Vampire Diaries obsession and now, to add to the list is Jamie Fraser. In fact, Jamie might top Mr. Darcy on this list.

Okay, now that I’ve piqued your interest, let’s start with the synopsis of Outlander by Diana Gabaldon.

The year is 1945. Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is just back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon when she walks through a standing stone in one of the ancient circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach—an “outlander”—in a Scotland torn by war and raiding border clans in the year of Our Lord…1743.

Hurled back in time by forces she cannot understand, Claire is catapulted into the intrigues of lairds and spies that may threaten her life, and shatter her heart. For here James Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior, shows her a love so absolute that Claire becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire—and between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.

In so many ways, this book has it all – adventure, mystical elements, history, and best of all, passionate romance between two characters that just captured my heart. The series is written in the first person narrative as we see the world through Claire’s eyes. The world that she was transported to – Scotland in 1743 – is not an easy place to be for a British citizen, much less a woman. And yet, after having survived as a combat nurse in World War II, she was determined to make it out alive and get back to her own time period and her husband, Frank.

And yet, through necessity, she finds herself wedded to a Scot named James Fraser, and it is here that the series became a page turner for me. Jamie Fraser is a man who can only be described as lovable to the nth degree. He is chivalrous, honorable, brave, smart, romantic and devilishly handsome. He isn’t afraid to risk his life to save those he cares for, or to sacrifice himself to do the right thing. Having to be surrounded by such a patriarchal society, Claire, caring, intelligent and strong-willed, becomes the perfect foil for Jamie. In so many ways, Jamie is written with deeper layers than the main character herself, and it is within those layers that Jamie has become one of my favorite male characters to have been written. It also helps that he has an alluring Scottish accent and sentences in Gaelic now and again.

This series is not for the faint of heart, however. There are scenes that do get graphic, especially in the first couple of seasons, and I’ve had to fast forward a few pages because I just couldn’t stomach the gory details.

If you’re not up for reading the book, it is an amazing series on Starz! The quality/budget of the first season isn’t great but it gets better!
